Unified Relay

Sarah Sanderson (Bib # 78), Matthew Tignanelli (Bib # 80) Silver Medal

For the first time Special Olympics Ontario offered a Unified Relay on June 2nd. This involved a relay team comprised of 2 Special Olympics athletes and 2 Unified Partners. Eight Unified teams participated in the first time event. SJSH had two Unified Teams participate Sarah Sanderson, Matthew Tignanelli and Emily Lessard and Aidan Devine.

The athletes had the opportunity to participate in two workshops in the afternoon of June 2nd. Strong Minds – educates and empowers athletes on the importance of mental health, mindfulness and techniques to improve their performance on and off the field.  Health Promotion – screening and education on subjects including nutrition, bone health, hydration and sun safety. The Special Olympics Healthy Athletes is a worldwide health program designed to address the unique challenges that face many people with intellectual disabilities surrounding health care and communicating their health needs. SOO is working hard to improve athlete health initiatives because they know that if they can encourage individuals with an intellectual disability to become healthier, their personal health burden and decrease, and their physical abilities; athletic performances and overall quality of life will improve. When questioned which Strong Minds Technique they enjoyed the most, all nine agreed Yoga was the best.
