Bears Bring Home The Gold
The St. Joseph Scollard Hall Bears Special Olympics Soccer Team is the Special Olympics Provincial A Champions of 2014. The Bears participated in the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial School Tournament held in York Region on June 4th and 5th. The Bears played in the Shiver Soccer Division against Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School from Collingwood and Maplewood High School from Toronto.
The Bears were undefeated in the divisional games held at Chippewa Secondary School on March 25th of this year, undefeated at the Special Olympics preliminary games on Wednesday June 4th at Richmond Green Sports Centre in Richmond Hills, and undefeated at the Provincial Round Robins at Bill Crothers Secondary School in Unionville.
The players really pulled together and supported each other. Sarah Sanderson, Cory Stone, Mitchell Heyd, and Emily Lessard were the defense. James Tukalak, Ryan Poulin (captian), Matthew Tignanelli, and Lucas Armstrong were the forwards. Armstrong pulled off a hat trick in the final game which won the round robin 3 – 0 against Jean Vanier CDSS. Dameion Southwind, the team’s goalie said, “It was his best birthday ever!” Dameion defended his house to have a 2 game “shut out” during the day.
Mitchell Heyd summed up the two day event by saying, “This is better than playing video games!” Well done Bears! A great season for all! What colour is the sky? GREEN AND GOLD.
