GRADES 10 COMPULSORY COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

HRE 2OR Religious Education - Christ and Culture Open

This course both invites and challenges the adolescent to personalize the Gospel values and social justice principles that guide Catholics in understanding their role in shaping culture as disciples of Jesus. Students will explore such foundational topics as: what it means to be human, created in God’s image, what is culture, Christ and culture, living together in solidarity, social justice, prayer and sacrament, friendship and intimacy. Connections between the living Church and contemporary culture are explored in terms of what it means to be a responsible Christian adolescent in a secularized, pluralistic world.

HRE 2OF Religious Education French Immersion

Prerequisite: FIF 1DC

An investigation into how the Church, through her Moral Teachings and Sacramental Life, can guide a teenager in being a true disciple of Jesus. This course also helps students develop attitudes and values founded on Catholic social teaching and promote social responsibility and human solidarity. The Language of Instruction in this course is French. Students are expected to express themselves in French at all times, both orally and in writing. 

HRE 2OA Religious Education - Christ and Culture Open - Art Option 

Prerequisite: AVI 1OC

This course both invites and challenges students to personalize the principles that guide Catholics in understanding their role as disciples in our culture through art. This is explored both through an examination of historical expressions and tapping into student’s artistic creativity to find expression of their own faith. It would appeal to students wishing to learn more about how religion is expressed through art.

ENG 2DC English- Academic

Prerequisite: ENG 1DC

This course is designed to extend the range of oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyse literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. Several of the units studied throughout the course focus on Christian themes and place an important focus on gospel values and the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. This course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 11 university or college preparation course. 

ENG2PC English - Applied

Prerequisite: ENG 1DC

This course is designed to extend the range of oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in secondary school and daily life.  Students will study and create a variety of informational, literary, and graphic texts. An important focus will be on the gospel values which are relevant to the issues studied in each unit and the consolidation of strategies and processes that help students interpret texts and communicate clearly and effectively. This course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory   Grade 11 college or workplace preparation course. 

ENG 2LC English - Locally Developed

Prerequisite: ENG 1DC or ENG 1LC

This course aims to enhance the self-worth of the adolescent in a Catholic school setting through the further development of skills inherent in literacy and critical thinking. In particular, the Locally Developed English course works toward preparing students for the Grade 11 English Workplace course.  The Locally Developed Grade 10 English course provides ongoing remediation and support for students while reinforcing the development of self-confidence and skills of interdependent learning. Emphasis is placed on key reading, writing, oral communication and thinking skills students need for success in secondary school and in their daily lives.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who listens actively and critically to understand in the light of Gospel values; read, understands, and uses written materials effectively; and presents information and ideas honestly and with sensitivity to others. 

MPM 2DC Principles of Mathematics - Academic

Prerequisite: MTH 1WC

This course enables students to broaden their understanding of relations, extend their skills in multi-step problem solving, and continue to develop their abilities in abstract reasoning. Students will pursue investigations of quadratic functions and their applications; solve and apply linear systems; solve multi-step problems in analytic geometry to verify properties of geometric figures; investigate the trigonometry of right and acute triangles; and develop supporting algebraic skills. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life-long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and time and resource management skills.

MFM 2PC Foundations of Mathematics - Applied

Prerequisite: MTH 1WC

This course enables students to consolidate their understanding of key mathematical concepts through hands-on activities and to extend the problem solving experiences in a variety of applications. Students will solve problems involving proportional reasoning and the trigonometry of right triangles; investigate applications of piecewise linear functions; solve and apply systems of linear equations; and solve problems involving quadratic functions. The effective use of technology in learning and in solving problems will be a focus of the course. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life-long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and time and resource management skills. 

MAT 2LC Compulsory Mathematics - Locally Developed 

Prerequisite: MTH 1WC or MAT 1LC 

This course provides students, who have experienced significant difficulties in past Mathematics courses with an opportunity to obtain sufficient knowledge and skill development. This course will prepare them for Grade 11 and 12 Workplace Preparation Courses and for entry into the work environment. Students will investigate and apply key numeric and algebraic skills through practical applications, explore relationships in straight lines and geometric figures, patterns in numbers and geometry. Learned skills will allow them to solve real-life problems involving the measurement of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional figures. Students will also have the opportunity to consolidate their skills and demonstrate their understanding of key mathematical concepts though the completion of a year-long consolidating project. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life-long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and time and resource management skills. 

SNC2DC Science – Academic

Prerequisite: SNC 1WC

This course enables students to enhance their understanding of concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics, and of the interrelationships between science, technology, society, and the environment. Students are also given opportunities to further develop their scientific investigation skills. Students will plan and conduct investigations and develop their understanding of scientific theories related to the connections between cells and systems in animals and plants; chemical reactions, with a particular focus on acid–base reactions; forces that affect climate and climate change; and the interaction of light and matter.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society. 

SNC2PC Science - Applied

Students are given opportunities to develop further practical skills in scientific investigation. SNC2LC Science – Locally Developed

This course emphasizes reinforcing and strengthening science-related knowledge and skills, including scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and the environmental impact of science and technology, to prepare students for success in everyday life, in the workplace, and in the Science Grade 12 Workplace Preparation course. Students explore a range of topics, including science in the media, interactions of common materials, interdependence of organisms in communities, and using electrical energy.  Students have the opportunity to extend mathematical and scientific process skills and to continue developing their skills in reading, writing, and oral language through relevant and practical science activities. CHC 2DC Canadian History since WWI - Academic

This course explores social, economic, and political developments and events and their impact on the lives of different groups in Canada since 1914. Students will examine the role of conflict and cooperation in Canadian society, Canada’s evolving role within the global community, and the impact of various individuals, organizations, and events on Canadian identity, citizenship, and heritage. They will develop their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating key issues and events in Canadian history since 1914.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society. 

CHC 2PC Canadian History since WWI - Applied

This course focuses on the social context of historical developments and events and how they have affected the lives of people in Canada since 1914. Students will explore interactions between various communities in Canada as well as contributions of individuals and groups to Canadian heritage and identity. Students will develop their ability to apply the concepts of historical thinking and the historical inquiry process, including the interpretation and analysis of evidence, when investigating the continuing relevance of historical developments and how they have helped shape communities in present-day Canada. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society. 

CHC 2DF Canadian History in the 20th Century - Academic - French Immersion

Prerequisite: FIF 1DC

This course explores Canadian participation in global events and traces our development as a country through the changes in population, economy and technology. Students will analyze the elements that constitute Canadian identity, learn the stories of both individuals and communities, and study the evolution of political and social structures. Students will learn about differing interpretations of the past, and will come to understand the importance in historical studies of chronology and cause - and - effect relationships. They will also learn to develop and support a thesis, conduct research and analysis and effectively communicate the results of their inquiries. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society. NAC 2OC First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Peoples in Canada - Open

This course explores First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples’ relationships with Canada from pre-contact to the 21st century. Students will examine social, economic, political and military interactions that impact the contemporary realities of Aboriginal people in Canada in relation to identity, culture, community, land, and governance. Students will explore their own and others’ ideas using the historical inquiry process to think critically and respond responsibly about civic questions raised today as a result of the changing relationships. This course helps students continue their journey as a discerning believer in enabling them to better understand, respect and appreciate the Aboriginal culture.

Career Studies - Open - 0.5 Credit

This course teaches students how to develop and achieve personal goals for future learning, work, and community involvement. Students will assess their interests, skills, and characteristics and investigate current economic and workplace trends, work opportunities, and ways to search for work. The course explores postsecondary learning and career options, prepares students for managing work and life transitions, and helps students focus on their goals through the development of a career plan. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a collaborative contributor who applies skills for employability, self-employment and entrepreneurship relative to Christian vocation. The language of instruction in French at all times, both orally and in writing. 

CHV 2OC (CHV 2OF French Immersion Prerequisite: FIF 1DC)

Civics and Citizenship- Open - 0.5 Credit

This course explores rights and responsibilities associated with being an active citizen in a democratic society. Students will explore issues of civic importance such as healthy schools, community planning, environmental responsibility, and the influence of social media, while developing their understanding of the role of civic engagement and of political processes in the local, national, and/or global community. Students will apply the concepts of political thinking and the political inquiry process to investigate, and express informed opinions about, a range of political issues and developments that are both of significance in today’s world and of personal interest to them. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life. 

GRADE 10 ELECTIVE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

AMT 2OC Musical Theatre

This course allows students to participate in all aspects of putting on a full scale musical production including performance, composition, direction, production and stage craft with an emphasis on Drama. Students will also study the history and cultural significance of musical theatre, while working collaboratively to learn, lead, and think critically about and throughout the process towards their culminating activity: a musical theatre production.

AMU 2OC Music - Instrumental 

This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and apply the elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures.

AMV 2OC Music - Vocals 

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level emphasizing ensemble singing.  It strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively.  Students will also be required to develop thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology and history. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith Tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media, technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life.

AMG 2OC Music - Guitar 

This course emphasizes performance of music at a beginning level on a standard acoustic guitar.  It strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively.  Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music including the elements, terminology, standard music notation (not tab), and history.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith Tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media, technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life.

AMM 2OC Music & Computers 

Recommendation: AMU 1OC

This course is designed to explore composition, arranging and recording through the use of current computer and synthesizer technology. This course emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity and imagination.  This course helps students meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each to become and effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith Tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media, and technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life. 

 

ATC 2OC Dance

This course emphasizes the development of students’ technique and creative skills relating to the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations. Students will identify responsible personal and interpersonal practices related to dance processes and production, and will apply technologies and techniques throughout the process of creation and development.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life.

ADA 2OC Drama

This course is designed for students who have completed one full year of Dramatic Arts experience in Grade 9. The course requires students to actively explore dramatic forms and techniques, using their own ideas and concerns as well as sources selected from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Student learning will include identifying and using the principles of space, time, voice, and movement in creating, sustaining, and communicating authentic roles within a drama. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creation and presentation of the drama, and will analyse and reflect on the experience. In addition, students will become actively involved in the catholic school community through performances and organization of ceremonies such as Lent, Stations of the Cross and Remembrance Day.

ASM 2OC Media Arts

This course enables students to create media art works by exploring new media, emerging technologies such as digital animation, and a variety of traditional art forms such as film, photography, video, and visual arts. Students will acquire communications skills that are transferable beyond the media arts classroom and develop an understanding of responsible practices related to the creative process. Students will develop the skills necessary to create and interpret media art works.

AVI 2OC Visual Arts 

Student learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporate the creative and design processes, and the relationship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith Tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media, technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life. 
ADD 2OC Drama (Production)
This course provides opportunities for students to explore dramatic forms, conventions, and techniques. Students will explore a variety of dramatic sources from various cultures and representing a range of genres. Students will use the elements of drama in creating and communicating through dramatic works. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creative and collaborative processes and will reflect on their experiences. This course has a focus on Production.

LNO BOC Native Languages:  Level 2

This course will enable students to experience the unique respect for life that permeates Native languages and cultures. Students will expand their vocabulary and knowledge of phrases and expressions, using them in simple dialogues, narrative writing, grammatical constructions, and reading, and to exchange information electronically. This course is open to any student who has successfully completed at least four years of elementary Native languages study, has successfully completed NL1, or demonstrates the required proficiency.   COURSE NOTE: Students need to have passed the LNOAOC course to select this one or have permission from the Language teacher to take this.  

BEP 2OC - Launching & Leading a Business

This course introduces students to the world of business and what is required to be successful, ethical, and responsible in today’s economy. Students will develop the knowledge and skills needed to be an entrepreneur who knows how to respond to local and global market opportunities. Throughout the course, students will explore and understand the responsibility of managing different functions of a business. This includes accounting, marketing, information and communication technology, financial management, human resources, and production.

ICS 20C Introduction to Computer Studies 

This course introduces students to computer programming. Students will plan and write simple computer programs by applying fundamental programming concepts, and learn to create clear and maintainable internal documentation. They will also learn to manage a computer by studying hardware configurations, software selection, operating system functions, networking, and safe computing practices. Students will also investigate the social impact of computer technologies, and develop an understanding of environmental and ethical issues related to the use of computers. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduation Expectations by encouraging them to become critical and innovative problem solvers who question the use of resources and understand the implications of technological innovations.

TCJ 2OC Construction Technology 

This course introduces students to building materials and processes through opportunities to design and build various construction projects. Students will learn to create and read working drawings; become familiar with common construction materials, components, and processes; and perform a variety of fabrication, assembly, and finishing operations.  They will use a variety of hand and power tools and apply knowledge of imperial and metric systems of measurement, as appropriate. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and will explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the industry.  Students will use the design process to solve a variety of technological problems in construction technology. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by helping them find meaning, dignity, fulfillment and vocation in work which contributes to the common good. 

TDJ 2OC Technological Design 

This course provides students with opportunities to apply a design process to meet a variety of technological challenges. Students will research projects, create designs, build models and /or prototypes, and assess products and/or processes using appropriate tools, techniques and strategies. Student projects may include designs for homes, vehicles, bridges, robotic arms, clothing, or other products. Students will develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to technological design, and learn about secondary and postsecondary education and training leading to careers in the field. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by having them apply effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, time and resource management skills. 

TFJ 2OC Hospitality & Tourism 

This course provides students with opportunities to explore different areas of hospitality and tourism, as reflected in the various sectors of the tourism industry, with an emphasis on food service.  Students will study culinary techniques of food handling and preparation, event planning, and will learn about tourism attractions across Ontario.  Students will develop an awareness of related environmental societal issues and will explore secondary and postsecondary pathways leading to careers in the tourism industry.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by encouraging them to develop and utilize their gifts and talents while creating products that benefit others in a way that models gospel values. 

FSF 2DC Core French - Academic

This course provides opportunities for students to communicate in French about personally relevant, familiar, and academic topics in real-life situations with increasing independence. Students will exchange information, ideas, and opinions with others in guided and increasingly spontaneous spoken interactions. Students will continue to develop their language knowledge and skills through the selective use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. They will also increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will continue to develop the skills necessary to become life-long language learners.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who writes and speaks fluently in one or both of Canada’s official languages.

FIF 2DC French Immersion - Academic

Prerequisite: FIF 1DC

This course provides students with extensive opportunities to communicate, interact, and think critically and creatively in French. Students will use a variety of language-learning strategies in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and will respond to and interact with print, oral, visual, and electronic texts. Students will develop their knowledge of the French language through the study of contemporary French literature and a variety of non-fictions texts.. They will also continue to increase their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities and to develop the skills necessary to become life-long language learners. This course also allows students to listen actively and critically in order to understand and learn in light of gospel values. 

PPL 2OX Healthy Active Living Education - Female

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating; and the use of informed decision-making and social skills in making personal choices. This course allows the students to continue their journey on becoming reflective, creative and holistic thinkers who are able to solve problems and make responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good of their health and the health and welfare of the community.

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living.
