HRE 4MR  Religious Education: Church and Culture - University/College

This course, designed for the university level student, is directed toward the clear identification of Catholic moral principles and their concrete application in the lives and relationships of students.  While grounded in Revelation, the course will examine the contributions of Philosophy and the sciences to a Catholic understanding of ethics and moral living. Students will explore their own ethical and moral stance through an examination of topics such as justice and peace, freedom, reconciliation and interpersonal relationships in order to prepare senior students for the lifelong task of discerning what is good while growing in their ability to live accordingly as moral persons. Note: Students who have passed HRT3MR and/or HRE4MR shall not be allowed to take HRF3OR and/or HRE4OR. The language of instruction in this course is French. Students are expected to express themselves in French at all times, both orally and in writing.

HRE4OR Religious Education: Church and Culture - Open

This course has the aim of assisting students in understanding themselves as moral persons living the way of Christ through an examination of the revelation of sacred Scripture, and the experience and teaching of the Catholic Church. It engages students in critical reflection on significant contemporary moral and ethical issues in light of Scripture, Church teaching, and their own experiences (i.e., Theological Reflection). Social and ecological justice issues are explored along with a study of topics that focus on Christian mercy and forgiveness. The graces and challenges of everyday human living, understanding who we are, what we are called to be, and living in relationships, including marriage, and family life are explored from a Catholic perspective. Students are challenged to adopt the Christian stance in the political world.

ENG 4UC English - University

This course emphasizes the consolidation of the literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life.  Students will analyse a range of challenging literacy texts from various periods, countries, and cultures; interpret and evaluate informational and graphic texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms.  An important focus will be on using academic language coherently and confidently, selecting the reading strategies best suited to particular texts and particular purposes for reading, and developing greater control in writing. The course is intended to prepare students for university, college, or the workplace.  This course also addresses numerous gospel values which are relevant to the issues studied in each unit. 

ENG 4UA - Advancement Placement English - University

AP English Literature and Composition is a seminar-style, university-level course centered on the analysis of fictional works. It builds on prior rigorous, foundational academic programming on concepts of character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and critical analysis. Both collaboratively and individually, students will engage with works of short and long fiction, poetry, and drama, and will read and write for multiple purposes. Developing a unique interpretation of texts, both classic and contemporary, and skillfully crafting an argument in writing through synthesis of multiple sources and the use of academic language are central to the successful completion of this course. ENG 4UA is intended to prepare students for university and the successful completion of the AP English Literature and Composition College Board examination.

OLC 4OC Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course - Open

This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).  Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation.  Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports.  Students will also maintain and manage a portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who listens actively and critically to understand in the light of gospel values; reads, understands and uses written materials effectively; and presents information and ideas honestly and with sensitivity to others.

MCV 4UC Calculus and Vectors – University

Prerequisite: MHF 4UC

This course builds on students’ previous experience with functions and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representations of vectors and representations of lines and planes in three dimensional space; broaden their understanding of rates of change to include the derivatives of polynomial, sinusoidal, exponential, rational, and radical functions; and apply these concepts and skills to the modeling of real-world relationships. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. This course is intended for students who choose to pursue careers in fields such as science, engineering, economics, and some areas of business, including those students who will be required to take a university-level calculus, linear algebra, or physics course.  This course helps students continue their journeys to become reflective, creative, and holistic thinkers by providing opportunities to evaluate situations and solve problems, often integrating learning from various subject areas. Note: The Advanced Functions course (MHF4U) must be taken prior to or concurrently with Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U).

MHF 4UC Advanced Functions - University

This course extends students’ experience with functions. Students will investigate the properties of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions; develop techniques for combining functions; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and skills.  Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics.  This course is intended both for students taking the Calculus and Vectors course as a prerequisite for a university program and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding of mathematics before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs.  This course helps students continue their journeys to become reflective, creative, and holistic thinkers by providing opportunities to evaluate situations and solve problems, often integrating learning from various subject areas.

MDM 4UC Mathematics of Data Management – University 

Prerequisite: MCR 3UC or MCF3MC

This course broadens students’ understanding of mathematics as it relates to managing data. Students will apply methods for organizing and analyzing large amounts of information; solve problems involving probability and statistics; and carry out a culminating investigation that integrates statistical concepts and skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathematical processes necessary for success in senior mathematics. Students planning to enter university programs in business, the social sciences, and the humanities will find this course of particular interest.  This course helps students continue their journeys to become reflective, creative, and holistic thinkers by providing opportunities to evaluate situations and solve problems, often integrating learning from various subject areas.  

MCT 4CC Mathematics for College Technology – College

Prerequisite: MCF3MC or MCR3UC

This course enables students to extend their knowledge of functions. Students will investigate and apply properties of polynomial, exponential, and trigonometric functions; continue to represent functions numerically, graphically, and algebraically; develop facility in simplifying expressions and solving equations; and solve problems that address applications of algebra, trigonometry, vectors, and geometry. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course prepares students for a variety of college technology programs. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life-long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and time and resource management skills.  

MAP 4CC Grade 12 Foundations for College Mathematics – College

Prerequisite: MBF3CC or MCF 3MC

This course enables students to broaden their understanding of real-world applications of mathematics. Students will analyze data using statistical methods; solve problems involving applications of geometry and trigonometry; solve financial problems connected with annuities, budgets, and renting or owning accommodation; simplify expressions; and solve equations. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course prepares students for college programs in areas such as business, health sciences, and human services, and for certain skilled trades. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and time and resource management skills. 

MEL 4EC Mathematics for Work and Everyday Life

This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as it is applied in the workplace and daily life. Students will investigate questions involving the use of statistics; apply the concept of probability to solve problems involving familiar situations; investigate accommodation costs, create household budgets, and prepare a personal income tax return; use proportional reasoning; estimate and measure; and apply geometric concepts to create designs. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, the structure and properties of matter, energy changes and rates of reaction, equilibrium in chemical systems, and electrochemistry. Students will further develop their problem-solving and investigation skills as they investigate chemical processes, and will refine their ability to communicate scientific information. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of chemistry in everyday life and on evaluating the impact of chemical technology on the environment.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by fostering a respect for the environment and the wise use of resources.  

SPH 4UC Physics - University

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of physics concepts and theories. Students will continue their exploration of energy transformations and the forces that affect motion, and will investigate electrical, gravitational, and magnetic fields and electromagnetic radiation. Students will also explore the wave nature of light, quantum mechanics, and special relativity. They will further develop their scientific investigation skills, learning, for example, how to analyse, qualitatively and quantitatively, data related to a variety of physics concepts and principles. Students will also consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by promoting effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, time and resource management skills.  

SNC 4MC Science - University/College

This course enables students, including those pursuing postsecondary programs outside the sciences, to increase their understanding of science and contemporary social and environmental issues in health-related fields. Students will explore a variety of medical technologies, pathogens and disease, nutritional science, public health issues, and biotechnology. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study and helps refine students’ scientific investigation skills.

SCH 4CC Chemistry – College Preparation

This course enables students to develop an understanding of chemistry through the study of matter and qualitative analysis, organic chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical calculations, and chemistry as it relates to the quality of the environment. Students will use a variety of laboratory techniques, develop skills in data collection and scientific analysis, and communicate scientific infor­mation using appropriate terminology.  Emphasis will be placed on the role of chemistry in daily life and the effects of technologi­cal applications and processes on society and the environment. SPH 4CC Physics – College

This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore these concepts with respect to motion; mechanical, electrical, electromagnetic, energy transformation, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; and the operation of commonly used tools and machines. They will develop their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics and solve both assigned problems and those emerging from their investigations. FEF 4UC Extended French - University

This course further emphasizes the consolidation of communication skills required to interact in French for various purposes about concrete and abstract topics. Students will independently apply language learning strategies in a variety of real-life and personally relevant contexts in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and will broaden their creative and critical thinking skills through responding to and analysing oral and written texts. Students will increase their knowledge of the French language through the study of Canadian and international French literature. They will also enrich their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities, and will develop skills necessary for lifelong language learning.

FIF 4UC French Immersion - University

This course provides students with extensive opportunities to communicate, interact, and think critically and creatively in French. During their grade 12 year, students will have the opportunity to take the DELF exam, an internationally recognized second language proficiency test. This course enables students to acquire an understanding of the nature of philosophy and philosophical reasoning skills and to develop and apply their knowledge and skills while exploring specialized branches of philosophy (the course will cover at least three of the following branches: metaphysics, ethics, epistemology, philosophy of science, social and political philosophy, aesthetics).  HSE4MC Equity and Social Justice: From Theory to Practice, University/College Preparation

This course enables students to develop an understanding of the theoretical, social, and historical underpinnings of various equity and social justice issues and to analyse strategies for bringing about positive social change. Students will learn about historical and contemporary equity and social justice issues in Canada and globally. This course investigates interactions between natural and human systems, with a particular emphasis on the impacts of human activity on ecosystems and natural processes. Students will use the geographic inquiry process, apply the concepts of geographic thinking, and employ a variety of spatial skills and technologies to analyse these impacts and propose ways of reducing them. In the course of their investigations, they will assess resource management and sustainability practices, as well as related government policies and international accords. This course allows students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active recreation. Students will have the opportunity to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed to plan, organize and safely implement recreational events and activities. They will learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active living to others through coaching them to make healthy decisions that have a positive impact on their well-being. This course will prepare students for university programs in health and physical education and kinesiology. This course introduces students to advanced accounting principles that will prepare them for postsecondary studies in business. Students will learn about financial statements for various forms of business ownership and how those statements are interpreted in making business decisions. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach to several styles/ movements reflecting a chosen theme. Students will assemble works for the creation of a digital portfolio required for some university/college programs. AWQ 4MC - Photography – University/College

This photography course will expand upon the Grade 11 course and focus on the development of skills and knowledge in the area of traditional and digital photography. Students will analyze photographic artworks and use theories of design in analyzing and producing photographs. Students will increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary photography. Students will continue to gain knowledge and understanding of advanced concepts using software specifically for enhancing Photos. Students will produce a portfolio used for University/College application demonstrating a personal approach to photography.

AWR4MC - Film/Video Production – University/College

Prerequisite: AWR 3MC

This advanced course provides an in-depth exploration of film and video. Students examine the evolution of film/tv from stage to screen and explore various filmmaking techniques and acting for the camera. Students also learn the structure and advanced techniques of television broadcast. They analyse scene structures, acting styles and genres of film and television. Students experiment with hands-on video production including commercial, documentary and landscape videography to develop a final portfolio for possible University/College application.

ADD 4MC Theatre Production – University/College

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of design advocacy and marketing, while building on their design skills and their knowledge of professional design practices.  Students will apply a systematic design process to research, design, build, and assess solutions that meet specific human needs, using illustrations, presentation drawings, and other communication methods to present their designs.  Students will enhance their problem-solving and communications skills, and explore career opportunities and the postsecondary education and training requirements for them. TCJ 4CC Construction Technology - College

Prerequisite: TCJ 3CC 

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills related to residential construction to explore light commercial construction.  Students will gain hands-on experience using a variety of materials, processes, tools, and equipment and will learn more about building design and project planning. They will continue to create and interpret construction drawings and will extend their knowledge of construction terminology and of relevant building codes and regulations, as well as health and safety standards and practices.  Students will also focus on environmental and societal issues related to construction engineering technology and explore career opportunities in the field.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by allowing them to work effectively as an interdependent team member and develop one’s God-given potential and make a meaningful contribution to society.  

TFJ4EC Hospitality and Tourism - Workplace

Prerequisite: TFJ 3CC

This course enables students to further develop knowledge and skills related to the food and beverage services sector of the tourism industry. Students will demonstrate proficiency in using food preparation and presentation tools and equipment; plan nutritious menus, create recipes, and prepare and present finished food products; develop customer service skills; and explore event and activity planning. Students will expand their awareness of health and safety practices, environmental and societal issues, and career opportunities in the food and beverage services sector. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by allowing them to apply skills for employability, self-employment and entrepreneurship relative to Christian vocation. 

TXJ 4EC Hairstyling and Aesthetics – Workplace

Prerequisite:  TXJ 3EC

This course enables students to develop increased proficiency in a wide range of hairstyling and aesthetics services.  Working in a salon/spa team environment, students will strengthen their fundamental cosmetology skills and develop an understanding of common business practices and strategies in the salon/spa industry. Students will also expand their understanding of environmental and societal issues and their knowledge of postsecondary destinations in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry.

Cooperative Education is a unique learning opportunity for grade 11 and 12 students that extends the learning in one or more related subjects into the workplace. The opportunity to experience business, industry and the community helps students explore career options and gather information they need to make informed decisions about their post-secondary destination. Students increase their self-knowledge while developing valuable transferable skills and gain an understanding of the importance of attitude, teamwork and personal management skills in the workplace. This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a collaborative contributor who applies skills for employability, self –employment and entrepreneurship relative to Christian Vocation. Students interested in experiencing Coop, not only must register for this course, but must also complete a Co-operative application form as well as bring a resume and cover letter pertaining to their job/career interest to their interview.

Note: Students interested in the Trades may do a 4 Credit Coop. However, they must see the OYAP Coordinator when it comes to an Apprenticeship.
