HRT 3MR World Religions and Belief Traditions:  Perspectives, Issues and Challenges

This course provides students with opportunities to explore various world religions and belief traditions. Students will develop knowledge of the terms and concepts relevant to this area of study, will examine the ways in which religions and belief traditions meet various human needs, and will learn about the relationship between belief and action. They will examine sacred writings and teachings, consider how concepts of time and place influence different religions and belief traditions, and develop research and inquiry skills related to the study of human expressions of belief.  Students taking ENG 3UC take HRT 3MR. Note: Students who have passed HRT 3MR and/or HRE4MR shall not be allowed to take HRF 3OR and/or HRE 4OR 

HRT 3MF World Religions: Beliefs, Issues & Religious Traditions - University/College – French Immersion

Prerequisite: FIF 2DC

This course introduces students to the responses of the world’s great religions to questions concerning the spiritual dimension of human experience.  Students will explore the language of religious discourse, develop their awareness of the role of religion in human culture, overcome misconceptions about other religious traditions and strengthen their personal search for answers to life’s meaning. This course also teaches students to respect and affirm the diversity and interdependence of the world’s peoples and cultures. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life-long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problems-solving, and time and resource management skills.  The language of instruction in this course is French. Students are expected to express themselves in French at all times, both orally and in writing.  

HRF 3OR World Religions – Faith and Culture - Open

This course engages students in the examination of world religions, particularly Judaism, Christianity and Islam, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Spiritualties’, and locally appropriate religious tradition(s), if suitable. This is a survey course that will help students understand the basic similarities and differences between the religious traditions so they can interact with others with acceptance and familiarity. Ontario is a multi-faith global community. Students will deepen their understanding of the various faith traditions in their local community and around the world.

ENG 3UC English - University Preparation

Prerequisite: ENG 2DC

This course emphasizes the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life.  Students will analyse challenging literacy texts from various periods, countries, and cultures, as well as a range of informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on using language with precision and is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 university or college preparation course.  This course also addresses numerous gospel values which are relevant to the issues studied in each unit. 

ENG 3UA Pre AP English - University Preparation

Prerequisite: ENG 2DC

This course emphasizes the development of deep literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in Grade 12 Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition. Key objectives of this course include teaching students how to successfully participate in seminar-style learning, and solidifying critical concepts of academic reading and writing introduced in the intermediate grades. Students will gain confidence in analyzing challenging literary texts, both classic and contemporary, and will create oral, written, and media texts using language to suit the purpose for writing. Emphasis will be placed on developing unique literary arguments grounded in close study of primary texts, and effectively researching and utilizing secondary sources to enhance literary analysis.  

NBE 3UC Aboriginal Voices - University Preparation


Prerequisite: ENG 2DC


This course emphasizes the development of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills through the study of works in English by Aboriginal writers. Through the analysis of literary texts and media works, students will develop an appreciation of the wealth and complexity of Aboriginal writing. Students will also conduct research and analyse the information gathered; write persuasive and literary essays; and analyse the relationship between media forms and audiences. An important focus will be the further development of students’ understanding of English-language usage and conventions.

NBE 3CC Aboriginal Voices - College

Prerequisite: ENG 2DC or ENG 2PC

This course explores the themes, forms, and stylistic elements of literary, informational, graphic, oral, cultural, and media text forms emerging from First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures in Canada, and also looks at the perspectives and influences of texts that relate to those cultures. In order to understand contemporary text forms and their themes of identity, relationship, and self-determination, sovereignty, or self-governance, students will study the use of text forms by Indigenous authors/creators from other periods in expressing ideas related to these themes. Students will also create oral, written, and media texts to explore their own ideas and understanding, focusing on the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in academic and daily life. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 English college preparation course.

ENG 3EC English - Workplace

This course emphasizes the development of literacy, communication, and critical and creative thinking skills necessary for success in the workplace and in daily life. Students will study the content, form, and style of a variety of contemporary informational, graphic, and literacy texts; and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms for practical purposes.  An important focus will be on using language clearly and accurately in a variety of formal and informal contexts. The course is intended to prepare students for the compulsory Grade 12 workplace preparation course. This course also addresses numerous gospel values which are relevant to the issues studied in each unit. 

NBE 3EC Aboriginal Voices - Workplace

Prerequisite: ENG 2DC, ENG 2PC or ENG 2LC

This course focuses on the beliefs, values, and aspirations of Aboriginal peoples in Canada. Students will examine issues of identity facing Indian, Métis, and Inuit peoples, and their relationships to land and nature, as well as to one another within their communities and working environments. Students will also learn how traditional and contemporary beliefs and values influence the present-day aspirations and actions of Aboriginal peoples.

MCR 3UC Functions - University

Prerequisite: MPM 2DC

This course introduces the mathematical concept of the function by extending students’ experiences with linear and quadratic relations. Students will investigate properties of discrete and continuous functions, including trigonometric and exponential functions; represent functions numerically, algebraically, and graphically; solve problems involving applications of functions; investigate inverse functions; and develop facility in determining equivalent algebraic expressions. Students will reason mathematically and communicate their thinking as they solve multi-step problems. This course helps students continue their journeys to become self-directed, responsible, life-long learners by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and time and resource management skills. 

MCF 3MC Functions and Applications – University/College

This course introduces basic features of the function by extending students’ experiences with quadratic relations. It focuses on quadratic, trigonometric, and exponential functions and their use in modeling real-world situations. MBF 3CC Foundations for College Mathematics - College

This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as a problem solving tool in the real world. Students will extend their understanding of quadratic relations; investigate situations involving exponential growth; solve problems involving compound interest; solve financial problems connected with vehicle ownership; develop their ability to reason by collecting, analyzing, and evaluating data involving one variable; connect probability and statistics; and solve problems in geometry and trigonometry. Students will consolidate their mathematical skills as they solve problems and communicate their thinking. MEL 3EC Mathematics for Work & Everyday Life- Workplace

This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathematics as it is applied in the workplace and daily life. Students will solve problems associated with earning money, paying taxes, and making purchases; apply calculations of simple and compound interest in saving, investing, and borrowing; and calculate the costs of transportation and travel in a variety of situations. AMT3MC Music Theatre - University/College 

Prerequisite: AMT 2OC

This course allows students to participate in all aspects of putting on a full scale musical production including performance, composition, direction, production and stage craft with an emphasis on music. Students will also study the history and cultural significance of musical theatre, while working collaboratively to learn, lead, and think critically about and throughout the process towards their culminating activity: a musical theatre production.

AMU 3MC Music, University/College

This course provides students with opportunities to develop their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music, including traditional, commercial, and art music. Students will apply the creative process when performing appropriate technical exercises and repertoire and will employ the critical analysis processes when reflecting on, responding to, and analysing live and recorded performances. Students will consider the function of music in society and the impact of music on individuals and communities. They will explore how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers. AMV 3OC Vocal Music - Open

This course develops students’ artistic knowledge and skills through the performance of music and the preparation of music productions.  Students will perform appropriate works, particularly works in contemporary popular styles. Independently and in groups, they will also plan, market, and produce music productions, making use of appropriate technology, and will evaluate the results. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media, and technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life. 

AMG 3MC Music - Guitar

AMM 3MC Music – Music and Computers – Recording Arts

This course is designed to explore composition, arranging and recording through the use of current computer and synthesizer technology. ATC 3MC Dance, University/College

This course emphasizes the development of technical, composition, and presentation skills in one or more world dance forms. Students will acquire and refine dance skills; compose and present increasingly complex dance works; interpret and evaluate a variety of dance presentations; and study the historical development of various dance forms and the function of dance in specific cultures. ADA 3MC Dramatic Arts University/College Preparation

This course requires students to create and to perform dramatic presentations.  Students will analyze, interpret and perform works of drama from various cultures, including Western plays from around 1900.  Students will also do research on different acting styles and conventions for their presentations, create original works and analyze the functions of playwright, director, actor, producer, designer, technician and audience. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic School Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith Tradition to enhance the quality of life. 

ASM 3MC Media ARTS

Prerequisite: ASM 2OC 

This course focuses on the development of media arts skills through the production of art works involving traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques such as new media, computer animation, and web environments. Students will explore the evolution of media arts as an extension of traditional art forms, use the creative process to produce effective media art works, and critically analyse the unique characteristics of this art form. Students will examine the role of media artists in shaping audience perceptions of identity, culture, and values.

AVI 3MC Visual Arts – University/College Preparation

Prerequisite: AVI 1OC or AVI 2OC

This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in fine arts in preparation for Fine Arts courses at the University or College level. Students will explore a range of subject matter including fashion, interior design and presentation for gallery format, through studio activities. They will consolidate their practical skills in the creation of teacher directed projects as well as the creation of an Independent essay and artwork. Students will also analyze art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as art forms from Canada. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who uses and integrates the Catholic Faith tradition, in the critical analysis of the arts, media technology and information systems to enhance the quality of life. 

AVI 3OC Visual Arts – Open

This course is designed for students who enjoy practical art; the course focuses on hands-on studio activities in visual arts which include drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, crafts and multimedia art. Interactive projects such as the “Haunted House”, float design for the “Santa Claus Parade” and special events also are included in this course. Students will use the critical analysis process to reflect and interpret are within a personal, contemporary and historical context. AWR 3MC - Film/Video Production University/College Preparation

Prerequisite: AVI 1OC or AVI 2OC

This course provides an in-depth exploration of film and video. Students examine the evolution of Western drama from stage to screen and explore various filmmaking techniques and acting for the camera. They analyze scene structures, acting styles and genres of film. Students experiment with video production to develop a final presentation.

AWQ 3MC - Photography University/College Preparation

Prerequisite: AVI 1OC or AVI 2OC

This introductory photography course will focus on the development of skills and knowledge in the area of traditional and digital photography. Students will analyze photographic artworks and use theories of design in analyzing and producing photographs. Students will increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary photography. Students will produce a portfolio demonstrating a personal approach to photography.

ADD 3MC Dramatic Arts (Play Production) University/College Preparation

This course involves play production. This course requires students to experiment individually and collaboratively with forms and conventions of both drama and theatre from various cultures and time periods. Students will interpret dramatic literature and other texts and media sources while learning about various theories of directing and acting. Students will examine the significance of dramatic arts in various cultures, and will analyse how the knowledge and skills developed in drama are related to their personal skills, social awareness, and goals beyond secondary school.

LNO COC Native Languages, Level 3 - Open


Prerequisite: LNO BOC 

This course will provide students an opportunity to expand their knowledge of a Native language and of Native philosophy, spirituality, and values, and to enhance their identity and self-worth. Students will communicate by using a variety of phrases and expressions, create short conversations, skits, stories, and narratives, use information technology, and develop an awareness of the structural and functional workings of a Native language. This course is open to students who have successfully completed NL2 or who can demonstrate the required proficiency.

NDA 3MC Aboriginal Issues in Canada - University/College Preparation

This course explores existing and emerging issues of local, regional, and national importance to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit in Canada. Students will analyse diverse perspectives on issues and events related to land, community, governance, identity, culture, and global trends. Using the concepts of political thinking and the tools of political inquiry, students will explore their own and others’ ideas and investigate issues to determine what needs to change and why. Students are also given the opportunity to develop their own problem solving strategies to address an issue of their choice.

By examining their own beliefs, values and assumptions, the worldviews of others and factors that influence world views, students will appreciate how traditional and contemporary beliefs and values influence present and future aspirations of Aboriginal peoples.

This course explores diverse knowledge, world views, and aspirations that shape the actions of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals and communities in Canada. Students

will examine issues of identity facing First Nations, Métis, and Inuit individuals and communities with respect to changing relationships with the land, nature, one another, and Canada. Students will explore their own and others’ world views, and the factors that shape world views over time, to develop an understanding of how traditional and contemporary beliefs and values influence the aspirations and practices of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. Students are given the opportunity to develop further understanding about the impacts of colonization and how reconciling diverse knowledge, world views, and aspirations contributes to a call for societal understanding.

BAF 3MC Financial Accounting Fundamentals University/College Preparation

This course introduces students to the fundamental principles and procedures of accounting.  Students will develop financial analysis and decision-making skills that will assist them in future studies and/or career opportunities in business.  Students will acquire an understanding of accounting for a service and a merchandising business, computerized accounting, financial analysis, and current issues and ethics in accounting.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by presenting information clearly and honestly and promoting that success in the world of business can be measured by more than just profits. 

BMI 3CC Introduction to Marketing College Preparation 

Prerequisite: None

This business course explores the fundamentals of marketing by defining its nature and scope. Specifically, students examine consumer consumption patterns and motivation, as well as the major factors that play key roles in the segmenting of markets. Also, there is an examination of current environmental, international, and technological trends. Students analyze how the aforementioned concepts impact a company’s positioning, pricing, distribution, and promotional strategies in light of an extremely competitive environment. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by creating, adapting and evaluating new ideas in light of the common good. 

BDI 3CC Entrepreneurship College Preparation 

Prerequisite: None

This course focuses on ways in which entrepreneurs recognize opportunities, generate ideas, and organize resources to plan successful ventures that enable them to achieve their goals. Students will create a venture plan for a school-based or student-run business. Through hands-on experiences, students will have opportunities to develop the values, traits, and skills most often associated with successful entrepreneurs.

BMX 3EC Marketing - Workplace 

Prerequisite: None

This course focuses on marketing activities in the retail and service sectors. Students will examine trends and global influences on marketing decisions, and will learn about the importance of customer service in developing a customer base and maintaining customer loyalty. Through hands-on learning, students will develop personal selling and information technology skills that will prepare them for a variety of marketing-related positions in the workplace.

This course explores Canadian law, with a focus on legal issues that are relevant to the lives of people in Canada. Students will gain an understanding of rights and freedoms in Canada, our legal system, and family, contract, employment, tort, and criminal law. Students will use case studies and apply the concepts of legal thinking and the legal inquiry process to develop legal reasoning skills and to formulate and communicate informed interpretations of legal issues, and they will develop the ability to advocate for new laws.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by examining, evaluating and applying knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, legal, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society.

ICS 3CC Introduction to Computer Programming - College

Prerequisite: None

This course introduces students to computer programming skills that will prepare them for post-secondary studies in computer studies or information technology. Students will learn the fundamentals of program design and structured programming, applying these skills to building software projects where project management and quality assurance are introduced. The student will explore computing environments, post-secondary opportunities, ethical and safe computing.  This course helps students continue their journey to become a self-directed, responsible lifelong learner by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply decision making and problem solving skills.  

ICS 3UC Introduction to Computer Science - University

Prerequisite: None

This course introduces students to computer science concepts and programming. Using object oriented programming techniques; students will develop problem-solving and programming skills. Students will use a variety of problem solving strategies and apply project management methods to design software solutions, and write programs. Students will explain the function of the basic computer components, describe and use appropriate file maintenance practices, and use software development tools to write and debug programs. As well students will identify careers in computer science and investigate topics in computer science theory to better appreciate the breadth of computer science. This course helps students continue their journey to become a self-directed, responsible lifelong learner by providing opportunities to develop and effectively apply decision making and problem solving skills. 

TCJ 3CC Construction Engineering Technology College Preparation

Prerequisite: None

This course focuses on the development of knowledge and skills related to residential construction.  Students will gain hands-on experience using a variety of construction materials, processes, tools, and equipment; learn about building design and planning construction projects; create and interpret working drawings and sections; and learn how the Ontario Building Code and other regulations and standards apply to construction projects. Students will also develop an awareness of environmental and societal issues related to construction technology, and explore career opportunities in the field.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enhancing student awareness of their surroundings and to relate their experiences to the life and values demonstrated by Jesus Christ.  

TDJ 3MC Technological Design - University/College Preparation

Prerequisite: None

This course examines how technological design is influenced by human, environmental, financial, and material requirements and resources.  Students will research, design, build, and assess solutions that meet specific human needs, using working drawings and other communication methods to present their design ideas.  They will develop an awareness of environmental, societal, and cultural issues related to technological design, and will explore career opportunities in the field, as well as the college and/or university program requirements for them This course helps students to meet the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by encouraging them to gain an awareness of their use of resources – renewable and non-renewable and are encouraged to recognize the implications of technological innovations on society as a whole.

This course enables students to develop knowledge and skills in cosmetology and offers a variety of applications that will equip students to provide services for a diverse clientele.  Students will identify trends in the hairstyling and aesthetics industry, learn about related health and safety laws, and expand their communication and interpersonal skills through interactions with peers and clients.  Students will consider environmental and societal issues related to the industry and acquire a more detailed knowledge of apprenticeships and direct-entry work positions. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by allowing them to apply skills for employability, self-employment and entrepreneurship relative to Christian vocation. 

FSF 3UC Core French - University

Prerequisite: FIF 2DC or FSF 2DC

This course offers students extended opportunities to speak and interact in real-life situations in French with greater independence. Students will develop their creative and critical thinking skills through responding to and exploring a variety of oral and written texts. They will continue to broaden their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities and to develop the skills necessary for life-long language learning. This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become an effective communicator who writes and speaks fluently in one or both of Canada’s official languages.  

FIF 3UC French Immersion - University

Prerequisite: FIF 2DC

This course provides opportunities for students to consolidate the communication skills required to speak and interact with increasing confidence and accuracy in French in a variety of academic and social contexts. Students will apply language-learning strategies while exploring a variety of concrete and abstract topics, and will increase their knowledge of the language through the study of French literature from around the world. They will also continue to deepen their understanding and appreciation of diverse French-speaking communities and to develop the skills necessary to become life-long language learners. This course also allows students to listen actively and critically in order to understand and learn in light of gospel values.  

FIF3UA French Language and Culture (Advanced Placement) - University 

Prerequisite: FIF 2DC (Note: Application Required) 

The Advanced Placement (AP) French Language and Culture class is a university level course intended for students in their senior level of second language study.  Students enrolled in the AP French Language and Culture course still complete the grade 11 Ontario FSL curriculum expectations; however, the content used to meet these curriculum expectations are dictated by the College Board and include the following six courses themes:  Global Challenges: War and conflict, Families and Communities, Personal and Public Identities, Beauty and Aesthetics, Science and Technology and Contemporary Life.  Students enrolled in this course should already have a good command of grammar structures as well as a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility.  Students in the course will demonstrate their proficiency in each of the four communication competencies (i.e. listening, speaking, ready and writing) while studying the six global themes, making comparisons between the native language and the target language and between various French language cultures.  They will use their second language skills to communicate in real-life, authentic situations and develop their knowledge and use of grammar structures in context.  Exclusive use of French by the teacher and the students is a key component of the course and occurs at all times within the classroom.  *Please note that only the Ontario FSL curriculum expectations will be evaluated and reported on for a student’s report card final mark.

This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and participation in a variety of physical activities that can engage students’ interest throughout their lives. Students will be given opportunities to practice goal-setting, decision-making, and social and interpersonal skills. This course will help the students to become a self-directed, responsible, reflective lifelong learner who shares their God given talents and demonstrates their Christian leadership skills.

This course focuses on the processes that occur in biological systems. Students will learn concepts and theories as they conduct investigations in the areas of cellular biology, microbiology, genetics, the anatomy of mammals, and the structure of plants and their role in the natural environment. Emphasis will be placed on the practical application of concepts, and on the skills needed for further study in various branches of the life sciences and related fields.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society. 

SBI 3UC Biology – University

This course furthers students’ understanding of the processes that occur in biological systems. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study, and helps students refine skills related to scientific investigation. SBI 3UA Pre-AP Biology - University Preparation  

Prerequisite: SNC 2DC

This course furthers students’ understanding of the processes that occur in biological systems. Students will study theory and conduct investigations in the areas of biodiversity; evolution; genetic processes; the structure and function of animals; and the anatomy, growth, and function of plants. The course focuses on the theoretical aspects of the topics under study, and helps students refine skills related to scientific investigation.  This course offers an enriched curriculum designed to prepare students for the grade 12 Advanced Placement Biology.  Registration must be accompanied by the signed Advanced Placement permission letter available in Student Services.

SCH 3UC Chemistry – University

Prerequisite: SNC 2DC

This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of the properties of chemicals and chemical bonds; chemical reactions and quantitative relationships in those reactions; solutions and solubility; and atmospheric chemistry and the behaviour of gases. Students will further develop their analytical skills and investigate the qualitative and quantitative properties of matter, as well as the impact of some common chemical reactions on society and the environment.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society.

This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of mechanical waves and sound; and electricity and magnetism. They will enhance their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics. In addition, they will analyse the interrelationships between physics and technology, and consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.  This course helps students to meet Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations by enabling each person to become a reflective and creative thinker who examines, evaluates and applies knowledge of interdependent systems (physical, political, ethical, socio-economic and ecological) for the development of a just and compassionate society.

Cooperative Education is a unique learning opportunity, for grade 11 and 12 students, which extends the learning in one or more related subjects into the workplace. The opportunity to experience business, industry and the community helps students explore career options and gather information they need to make informed decisions about their post-secondary destination. Students increase their self-knowledge while developing valuable transferable skills and gain an understanding of the importance of attitude, teamwork and personal management skills in the workplace. This course examines the main elements of the physical environment (climate, soils, landforms, oceans, vegetation), the processes that shape them, and the relationship between the environment and human beings. Students will apply a wide range of geographic tools and methods to explore the distribution and ongoing evolution of the elements of the physical environment on a variety of scales, from local to global. This course explores the history of various societies around the world, from earliest times to around 1500 CE. Students will examine life in and the legacy of various ancient and pre-modern societies throughout the world, including those in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. This course provides students with opportunities to think critically about theories, questions, and issues related to anthropology, psychology, and sociology. Students will develop an understanding of the approaches and research methods used by social scientists.
