To Organize research:
- Determine what information exactly the assignment requires
- Where can this information be found?… books, encyclopedias, atlases, vertical files, magazines, internet, and interview of experts.
- Start with a print source to identify the topic and make lists of research ideas
- Determine the division of labour and start.
What skills do students need so that they may research the Internet effectively?
- Must be able to use key words or phrases that will find a satisfactory website. Sometimes a text or encyclopedia will be the best place to find the keywords that will help locate the best website.
- Must be able to identify a satisfactory electronic site.
- Search for information effectively.
- Decide which links to follow.
- Navigate within a website and access homepage
- Critical evaluation of their search.
- Compile information without copying
- Look for useful quotes and save all bibliographic information needed.
Things to look for:
- Website information is up to date
- The site is reputable…created by a university, hospital, or a professional society (ex. Canadian Cancer society, a professor, a doctor or a member of a reputable organization)
- Should be an author or publisher listed at top or bottom of the opening web page. There also should be a date, at the bottom, that indicates
- "site last updated on…"
Student should look for keys that indicate an inferior site:
- Information is just an opinion expressed by an author and NOT factual
- Incorrect spelling and grammar and use of slang terms
- Bias against certain races, genders, religions, or cultures
- Hyperlinks don't work
- No author for the website and no date last updated
